Thank you to the hundreds of you who ventured out into the streets of Newmarket last week to join us in celebrating the start of the Christmas season. Our Making Magical Memories returned for another year, bringing with it our lights switch on event and performances by singer Ray Quinn.
A fantastic event enjoyed by all, the high street transformed to a family funfair with rides for the little ones, stalls from a few local businesses and a stage welcoming the afternoon’s entertainment.
We saw local singer Adam Thomas take to the stage, alongside Frankenstein’s Lobster and a performance from Brookes Cambridge School, before the grand finale welcomed Ray Quinn to push the button alongside the Love Newmarket BID Manager, Paul Brown and Mayor Rachel Hood.
Commenting on the evening, Paul Brown said: “Despite the weather it was a wonderful night with a great turnout. Ray Quinn was fantastic and everyone had a great time. I’d like to thank our sponsors and all those who worked so hard on the night to make the event so memorable. The Christmas light switch on is just one example of the great work Love Newmarket BID does throughout the year to improve and support our town centre and members.”
Supported by Newmarket Motorcycle Company, Juddmonte, Tattersalls, Newmarket Journal and Newmarket Racecourses, the event would not have been possible without them. Please keep an eye out for news of next year’s events coming soon.
Business of the Month: October
Celebrating its 10 year anniversary this November, Lemontree Properties has gained our award as Business of the Month. Having opened in Newmarket as an independent business owned by Client Services Director Beth Barnham, the business has continued to flourish and now employs seven local women.
Explaining her decision to open, Beth said: "The Cambridge agent I was working for prior to launching Lemontree decided that it was no longer a viable option to open a branch in Newmarket due to a decline in the sales market. Consequently they decided to sell it on.
"My husband and I seized the opportunity to buy the small portfolio of managed properties and within six weeks had found an office, hired our first member of staff (who’s still with us today), decided on the company name, sorted all of the branding and commenced with a new property management system.
"It was manic at first getting our heads round everything but with hard work and determination over the following years, we have grown into a highly reputable independent lettings specialist with over 300 managed properties."
Having recently attended our Love Newmarket BID Experience Day at Newmarket Racecourses, Beth commented it was great getting to put faces to names behind the brand.
When asked what the business plans are as we look towards the end of the year, Beth added: "We had our second rebrand recently to ensure that we keep our identity fresh and in front of our competition. Our new website and pool car reinforces this. We are also always committed to fulfilling our obligations to both our landlords and tenants, which in turn helps us to expand."
We look forward to seeing what the anniversary celebrations entail, but congratulate the local team for reaching such a milestone.

Premier Travel Welcome New Staff
Premier Travel has welcomed new travel experts to their Newmarket store after employing two people who lost their jobs in the collapse of Thomas Cook.
Alexis Gordon and Carly Lee will be joining the Premier Travel branch in The Guineas Shopping Centre from this week.
The agents, who have 35 years of experience, will be working almost directly opposite their old store so are looking forward to returning to normality.
Alexis said: “We were both totally devastated to hear the news about Thomas Cook. We had friends who worked at Premier and helped in telling us there were vacancies. Within the week, we both had new jobs which was a massive relief.
“We are looking forward to getting back to business and helping all of our customers book their holidays as usual.”
Paul Waters, Director of Premier Travel, said: “The travel industry is extremely close knit so we were devastated to hear the news of Thomas Cook.
“Premier Travel wanted to help in any way we could so fast-tracked interviews for staff who had lost their jobs. We are really pleased to have been able to welcome lots of new faces to our branches so far and back into a job they love.”

This month Love Newmarket BID proudly unveiled new street signs in the High Street in response to request from members of the Business Improvement District.
The black and gold signs give more information to shoppers about business and shops located just off the High Street on Old Station Road, Rous Road, Sun Lane and Wellington Street.
The original signs were erected some years ago by Newmarket Town Council, and our members have asked for them to be updated and refurbished. So we listened and acted.
The new street signs are there to direct the town's footfall to the businesses who aren't High Street facing, further emphasising the wealth of services provided here in Newmarket, and attracting more to visit.
Thank you to local business Flok for designing and Icon Sign and Design Ltd for installing.
Business of the Month: September
Indian cuisine with a modern twist, Montaz Newmarket definitely made its mark this month, becoming one of the most recommended places to dine in the UK. Listed in the 2020 Waitrose Good Food Guide, the quality ingredients, fantastic team and wide range of dishes has put Newmarket cuisine on the map.
Focusing on a delicate spicing, robust flavours and unique masterpieces, the Newmarket team, headed up by Ziaur Choudrey ‘Ziggy’, were over the moon to be listed saying: “Words cannot explain how happy we are. We would like to thank all of our customers for their support over the years.”
Renowned for its modern interior, the restaurant which opened on Old Station Road in 2011 has recently welcomed a new winter menu this month, with an exciting Supper Club Dinner Event set to preview its launch.
Always looking for new and exciting ways to introduce different flavours and dishes to its customers, Ziggy and his team are proud of the new direction the restaurant is taking, a result of many months’ work by Ziggy, his brother-in-law and nephew. Now running Supper Clubs every six weeks, on a Monday, it’s the drive and determination that make this business the perfect candidate for Business of the Month.
Congratulations on making the 2020 Good Food Guide, and we certainly look forward to the next Supper Club Experience.
